Journal Entry Question #10 for Journalism
Is it worth endangering ones' life to get the scoop?
After watching the video on CNN with Peter Silverman, I was extremely shocked. I was terrified because this is whatjournalists get when they try to get the scoop and full story themselves. Some of them can get it worst but they're endangering their lives just to get a story out of them. Journalists go out of their way to get the story they want because it'll attract people to the chaos. It is letting people know what is going on in their society that they don't even know about. I don't think it's worth it endangering your own life for a story because you never know what can happen. What happened to Peter Silverman was bad enough but imagine what else could happen that could be way worse. They're taking risks that can get them seriously injured. People get upset because journalists are invading their business and privacy. I believe anyone would get upset if ANYONE was trying to get in their business. I think that journalist should find a better and safer way to get the story they want. They don't have to show up at their house or outside their work to confront them. It's a lot to risk but journalists just wants the top story and they want to help others not to fall in their traps just like the women in the video. I also believe that journalists and reporters go out of their to get the full story because they want to be known for what they have achieved and the want the money for it. They think it's worth it risking your own life just to be known and to receive a lot of money for it. But it's a good way to show what's happening around us and hearing about the story but it's dangerous for the journalists themselves. Peter Silverman is a brave person for confronting and trying to get the full story on that angry business man. But I would have to say that journalists should set out a limit as how far they're going to go. I think showing up out of the blue in front of their house is just crossing the line. But journalists should know what's coming if they try to get the whole story. In some cases, I think it could be worth it to go to the full extent of getting a story if it would help society. But in my opinion, I just don't think it's worth it risking you own life for.

Journalism Journal Entry Question #7
"Putting out a zine, any zine, is a political act. Whether it's the high school kid who does a zine about Sloan, or the collective's newsletter advocating environmental awareness, both are reclaiming what was essentially theirs to begin with."- Hilary Clark
I agree with this quote about putting out a zine. I think that anyone can just create a zine about anything they wanted. You wouldn’t have to be a journalist or some sort of professional person to make your own zine. A high school kid can easily do a zine on music, politics, the environment, and just about anything. I believe it’s a political act because people who make zines are doing it to convey some sort of message to others. They are sharing their information to others just to see what people have to say. It’s all about communication which is expressing ourselves in the zines. Zines speak about what’s happening around us, the community, friends, family, school, and their future. It’s how one person feels about something that they want to express to the world and where people can relate to as well. I believe zines can change the world. People are writing about their opinions and the happenings around them. They are standing up for themselves by putting information out there. It could really make a difference in our world. Such as someone writing about poverty, about the government, or basically anything can make a difference. Zines are there to state your opinions and any information that people should know. They could also make people think long and hard about whatever you have in your zine. Zines don’t have any advertisement, they have real content and information. My first time making a zine was a good way to speak my mind and put out information that I wanted. Making a zine is an excellent way to express yourself and a way be heard.

Are Wii the Children of the Revolution?
There has been quite a bit of hype surrounding the new Ninetendo Wii gaming system. Some say that the Wii's ability to "democratize" gaming for people of all ages and abilities is revolutionary. Do you think this is a true technological revolution or just hype? Please defend your opinion.
Nintendo’s Wii is considered a technological revolution. But in my opinion, I just think its all hype. There’s so many changes in technology such as coming out with playstation, XBOX, and now the Nintendo Wii. I think that the Wii is just all around hyped up because just a few months ago, the playstation 3 was finally sold in stores and people were all hyping that up by lining up outside of BestBuy at 5 in the morning. Why isn’t anyone hyping it up now? It seems like all the talk about playstation 3 had died down over a couple of months. I believe it’ll be the same thing for the Wii. Maybe next year another new video game system will launch and everyone will forget about the Wii. Although the Wii is just hype, the Wii puts players in a position where they can take action in the video game and treat it like exercising. It’s a smart way to get people moving while they’re doing something they enjoy. For example, the baseball or football game makes players use their arms which is like exercising. I’ve also heard that playing the Wii can help people lose weight! It’s a great way to motivate people to exercise and move instead of sitting on the couch using your two thumbs on the controller. I believe that the Wii has the ability to democratize gaming for everyone. The name “Wii” itself defines “we” as in everyone in the world. I think that anyone could be interested in the Wii because it makes people involved in the action of the games. But overall, I still think that the Wii is just one big hype. New technology will keep continuing over the years and people would always want something better. Another example is the Ipods. First there’s just the original ipods where people can just put songs on them. And then the year after, there’s an ipod where you can play videos. And the year after that, there’s ipods where they’re super sleek and thin. I wonder what will come up next! Same goes with the video game systems and how technology for video game systems will continue. I have a feeling that later on in the future, another video game system will be invented and everyone will be all excited once again and spend crazy money on the video game system. People can never settle for what they have, we always want something new and better no matter what the cost is.

Forced image
Journal Entry Question #3
What do you think were the photographer's intentions in changing the photograph in such a dramatic way?
I think the photographer wanted attract viewers to his image. When he took that photo, he knew exactly what he saw. He probably thought it was appealing and interesting to him to make the scene more dramatic. He might have thought it wasn’t a hardcore news photograph where people would walk down the street and stop when they see the image on the cover of a newspaper. The photographer probably wanted his photo to be talked about and be the news of the day. The edited photograph can be false and fool people that it’s actually real, but sooner or later people will find out first hand if that really happened. The photographer probably changed the photograph to put more feeling and make people think a lot about what had happened. He wanted viewers to ask, “Why, where, and how?” it will grab peoples’ curiousity and interest and he believed people wouldn’t pay as much attention to the original photo. If that really didn’t happen in the image, then who cares because it’s the truth that really matters. The original picture is the truth and that will capture peoples’ attention. People want to rely on real information that they can follow up on current events and what’s happening in our world and society. We don’t want to see something that was forced and made up because some photographer or editor decided to change up the story to make it look interesting. It’s a waste of peoples’ time to be interested in false information. There’s honestly no point in changing it into a more dramatic photo because the truth will ALWAYS come out. People will believe it for awhile but it wouldn’t matter anymore later on. The photographer’s intention was to create and force something that never existed in his photo to capture feeling and curiousity from viewers. Although an original photo might not be as appealing as a dramatic photo, it’s the truth that lies behind the photo is what matters the most.

Hidden Truth
Journal Entry Question #2
In photojournalism, when is it appropriate to use PhotoShop? When is it not appropriate? Does altering the photograph mean altering the truth?
I read the article and examined the photoshoped picture. In my opinion, I think that altering a photograph like the one with the dark smoke is altering the truth. It is only appropriate to use photoshop for a picture to make it brighter, change the contrast or crop. Making a photo brighter or cropping it is just enhancing the photo to look better and clearer to viewers. To crop is to cut off any unnecessary minor parts that won’t change up your whole photo. The photo with the dark smoke and the duplications of the building and more smoke creates a whole new story. I always hear that saying, “ pictures never lie.” I think sometimes it does because anyone can use photoshop and add things that make the photo look real. It isn’t appropriate to use photoshop by adding certain things or changing the whole photo. Enhancing a photo is when it is appropriate to use photoshop. The clone tool shouldn’t be used in photos like a news story. The photo is hiding the real truth with lies. Knowing that people can easily change a photo into something different makes me wonder how other important photos could have been a lie and edited like the one with the dark smoke photo. It’ll make people wonder if one person can change a photo, others could too and we would all believe in a lie. People just change photos to make everything so dramatic and want to catch more attention to viewers. If that photo was on the cover of a newspaper, people would be attracted to all the chaos and craziness in the photo. People depend on accurate information and reliability. They find it interesting to look at and not just a photo of a couple of buildings and just one big smoke coming out of them. That’s one reason why people want to change up their photos and try to catch peoples’ eye. This is false imformation by misleading people in believing something that doesn’t exist. People take advantage of photoshop and use it until they get something they want and what’s going to make people interested. The edited photos are one BIG lie. It’s hiding the real truth and what is really happening these days. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell if a photo has been edited or if it’s truly real and that puts people in a position where they ask themselves,”Did that really happen?!” Overall, we can’t believe everything we see.

Teen Virginity and Peer Pressure
Journal Question #1
The 5W's: Who, What, Where, Why & When
Who: Tiffany Griffin
What: Tiffany Griffin talks about the issue of teen virginity and pregnancy which is all caused by peer pressure.
Where: Peer pressure of teens happens mostly at school
Why: Some teens think its "cool" to lose their virginity just to fit in.
When: Teens mostly lose their virginity around 18 years old because of peer pressure
I absolutely agree with this article. I believe every teen should take the time to read this article and listen to the message the author is sending out. This article talks about how young teens get pressured to lose their virginity and they usually end up doing it just to be cool. It's all about peer pressure that makes people do what they don't want to do. Smoking, drugs, sex, pregnancy can be causes of peer pressure. In my opinion, I think the whole idea of doing something you don't want to do is stupid. Friends or a boyfriend who pressures someone to lose their virginity aren't what you call "real" friends and boys can sweet talk and make you believe that he's in love with you. If you’re not ready, don't do anything you’ll regret later on in life. And if you don't lose your virginity or do drugs, you're considered uncool by your so-called friends. Who cares! You have to lose everything and who you really are just to be considered "cool." Teens should really listen to those who actually care about them and not do anything they will regret in the future. Most teens regret losing their virginity to the one they THOUGHT they loved. Once you lose something, you can never get it back. It's a tough decision to make but I totally agree with the author which is to wait for marriage! There's no rush, we're young! Some teens get pregnant because some of their friends are. It seems like these teens want to become adults really badly that they want a baby of their own! Why have a baby when they can't even take care of themselves? It's not a very smart choice to make when you're just a teenager. Also, boys can be very manipulative. Boyfriends can say "If you love me, you'll lose your virginity to me." Oh please, if you don't feel it, don't do it as simple as that. Just say NO! A good boyfriend shouldn't even say that in the first place and if you given in to what he said, then you'd likely regret losing your virginity to him. People should really look around and actually see who genuinely cares and loves them and the ones who pretends to care to get something from you. And even if you lost your virginity to your boyfriend, how would you know that they will be there for you forever? What's the point losing something so fast to someone who won't be there all your life. Boyfriends and friends come and go all the time. The ones who pressure you to do somehting you don't want to do are just a waste of your time. Save the best for last which is when you MARRY! Life goes on, there's no need to rush into something you don't want to do.
